Food brings us together

A hundred years of great desire
Transparent Tradition
Those who claim to possess the key to eternity know better than anyone that a bit of nostalgia does not necessarily clash with an ambitious vision of the future.
Not all things were better in the old days. They might be tomorrow. Why not start today?
Importing charcuterie, cheese and catering products has been in our blood for decades. It was no accident that the first Parma ham on Belgian soil passed through the furrowed hands of grandfather Robert. To put it bluntly, he taught his people to eat charcuterie.
And that’s what the third generation of the Schietse family is still doing today. With respect for tradition, an eye to the future, and in full transparency from producer to consumer. What you see is what you get.
Our hands are empty, there is nothing up our sleeves. Guaranteed to be the best basis for building a relationship of mutual trust with the customer: honesty is the best policy. In our case, for over hundred years.

Pure Products
We never take anything for granted. Sure, there may always be some domestic or foreign producer who adamantly claims to produce the very best strolghino
di culatello, scamorza or Serrano ham.
But we will not partner up with him until we have thoroughly assessed, tasted and examined his speciality from every possible angle. If passion means leaving nothing to chance, then we are passionate down to our cores. Taste is, of course, the overriding factor, but there are also other factors to consider. What is the composition or nutritional value? Which ingredients do not comply with the Belgian standard and by what can they be replaced, or how can we make the recipe even better? And even: what does the packaging look like? If it is not suitable for our market, we may even design a completely new look. Packaging protects products, facilitates their transport, and informs consumers. Appearance also counts.
We make the selection. Pure and uncut.

Combination-oriented Consultancy
“Between dream and deed, laws get in the way, and practical objections and even melancholy that no one can explain.“
Signed Willem Elsschot, 1910. A touch of poetry – which is after all the charcuterie of literature – from a passionate baker’s son is never amiss.
The ‘Schietse Academy’ is a place where the hundreds of products that we offer can fully come to life. Suggesting original recipes, transferring advanced knowledge, organising tenders, professional tastings, tips & tricks for cutting, etc. We listen to our customers and work with them to find a suitable solution. “Here’s your ham, thank you and see you soon.” No, that’s not our style. Quite the opposite in fact. Taste, smell, texture, colour and packaging are always open to discussion.

Wholesome Holiday Spirit
More and more people increasingly go abroad for their
holidays. From short skiing breaks over city trips to extensive summer holidays. However, they all have one
thing in common: they’re always too short.
The trick is to keep that wholesome holiday spirit going
for as long as possible. And what better way to do this than on your plate? Tourists travel by their stomachs.
Holidaymakers may choose to visit Tuscany, or Calabria,
or Extremadura in Spain. In their hotel, at a restaurant or in the local tapas bar, a tasty platter of charcuterie or cheeses is never far away. “Ah! If we only had this at home,” can frequently be heard on such occasions.
We consider it a matter of honour to make that happen.
In all these well-known and lesser-known regions, we go
looking for specialists, producers sharing the same
traditional values and quality standards, so that they can
also offer their produce on the Belgian market.

Congenital Conviviality
Belgians are Burgundians. This hackneyed cliché of our national character does have some truth to it. Eat your heart out! Let it be clear, we don’t do anything of the kind. Did you know that Belgians rank third worldwide in terms of annual consumption of Parmesan
cheese and Italian charcuterie? That’s no mean feat for
such a small territory with such a small population.
The same cannot be said for our neighbours. The Dutch are still far removed from our culinary tradition and associated eating habits; the French are above all chauvinistic and therefore prefer local produce, whereas the Germans are gluttons. Of course, foreign producers have not failed to notice this either. Despite our small size, we are actually perceived as a major player, even as some kind of international flavour palette lab. We are quite unique in this area. Belgians attach a great deal of importance to their kitchen. They are the champions of social dining, after the Italians.

Sensational Speed
Speed of execution, playing close to the ball, thinking at least three moves ahead. These familiar football terms have long become daily routine for us. We deliberately have a rather limited organisation chart – one of the advantages of a family business. Being able to quickly put heads together to take a particular decision is beneficial for production. If we announce a novelty today, it will be on the shelves by next week. It does not need to be preceded by countless board meetings, executive committees, or approvals.
The trick is to keep the lines short in any way possible. Buying. Selling. No need for intermediaries. The buyer has seen the product, knows the story behind it, has felt, smelled and tasted it. Could anyone be more suitable to sell the product? Fast, faster, most efficient.

Retroactive Respect
However hollow such a loaded term as respect may sound today, we still attach enormous importance to it. Respect for the past with a keen eye on the future. Respect for the company and the many products, but above all also for all the people who work there, the suppliers, customers, and people in general. Mutual respect automatically leads to collegiality, a warm feeling of solidarity. Everyone knows everyone and everyone knows what is expected of them. If you feel respected, you are also more open to flexibility, which in turn benefits effectiveness. It’s a vicious circle with authenticity as its centrifugal force. Genuineness. No hassle. Closely monitoring and responding to the market’s logistical and commercial needs with a sense of subtlety and taste. For more than one hundred years and still counting!
